Ferndown

Ferndown is a small, pleasant town in Dorset, lying north of Bournemouth and east of Wimborne Minster in a semi rural location. The town has a population of 26,858 (2001 census) and is twinned with Segré, Brittany, France. There is a relatively large High Street providing a variety of shops including clothes, chemists and stationery shops and two large supermarkets. You will also find banks and a post office here, as well as several cafes and restaurants.

Ferndown has King George's Field in memorial to King George V. Here is located the Leisure centre with many different activites and sports to do and equipment to use, including a large swimming pool. There are also many clubs on offer.

Ferndown Golf Club offers two courses; The Old Course also known as the Championship Course and the nine hole Presidents Course. There is a thriving friendly membership and Seniors are very welcome. Following your 18 hole excercise, you can stop for lunch in the restaurant in the clubhouse.

Ferndown Community Centre is one of the town's main attractions, home to the Barrington Theatre, where there are regular performances of plays, concerts and panto. Also located here is Ferndown Library for all your literary requirements.

Around the area, there are many large heathlands including Holt heath. These are good for cycling or walking and a fair amount of woodland which is home to deer and other wildlife. Also on many of the heaths and in much of the woodland there are many ancient burial mounds and small ponds with the local wildlife. It is only a short bus or car journey to either Poole or Bournemouth, where more cosmopolitan entertainment can be found.
